Sloe is a golf qualifier

Christopher Sloe of Aurora qualified for the Junior PGA Championship recently in the first in a series of qualifiers at Riceland Golf Club near Orrville. He, along with Mark Schlabach of Berlin shot the qualifier's best scores -- 1-over-par 72 -- in the boys 16-18 age division. Ten junior golfers qualified.

Mylotts named MVPs

Students, faculty and parents at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson celebrated the accomplishments of athletes during the spring awards ceremony May 19.

Earning honors as most valuable players in baseball were Class of 2015 members Joseph and Patrick Mylott of Aurora. WRA also recognized 265 athletes who earned letters this year in 23 varsity sports, nine seniors who were three-sport letter winners and 36 who were varsity captains.

Mehallises place high

Jimmy Mehallis of Aurora placed first in the 10-11-year-old age group at the Blossom Time Run 5.25-miler in Chagrin Falls. His time was 42:42. His sister Lexie was ninth among 14-15-year-olds in 43:13 and their mother Debbie was 17th amoing 45- to 49-year-old women in 43:03.

Grdina scores an ace

Jack Grdina of Aurora aced the 130-yard, par 3 11th hole at Oak Knolls Golf Course in Kent on May 17. He used an 8-iron. It was his seventh career hole-in-one.

Season tickets for the 2014 Kent State football season are nnow on sale. The Golden Flashes will play six games at Dix Stadium and packages can be purchased for as low as $10 per game.

Chairbacks at $96 and general admission packages at $60 both include a season-long parking pass at a $30 value.

Season ticket holders will also be given an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets for KSU's road game at Ohio Stadium against the Buckeyes on Sept. 13.

As an incentive, new season ticket holders will be given a chance to win a trip with the team to the University of Virginia for the Sept. 27 game in Charlottesville.

Other perks for season-ticket holders include merchandise discounts and a special invitation to an appreciation event prior to the season.

Hradisky gets district

honors for academics

Baldwin Wallace University track and field athlete Brooke Hradisky of Aurora has been given 2014 Capital One Division III Academic All-District 7 honors. She now qualifies for the national Capital One Academic All-America ballot.

Hradisky, who carries a 3.93 grade point average in political science, competed in cross country and track. She was B-W's 2014 Clyde Lamb Award winner, symbolic of the school's most outstanding female student-athlete and was the B-W Student Service Organiziation's student of the year.

Hradisky, who served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2013-14 was a multiple All-Ohio Athletic Conference performer and ranked among the best 800-meter runners in Division III. She was the indoor and outdoor All-Ohio 800 runnerup, and was a four-year standout on the cross country team.

In the classroom, Hradisky was a dean's list student, member of the Alpha Lambda, Dayton C. Miller and Chi Sigma Alpha honoraries and a Jacket scholar.

Area golfers are registering for the 2014 editions of the Portage County Amateur and Junior Amateur.

The 7th Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur will tee off July 21-22 with divisions for 12 and under, 13 to 15 and 16 to 19 for both boys and girls.

The 84th Record-Courier Amateur and Senior Amateur is set for July 26-27, with open, senior men, gold men, platinum men, women and senior women divisions.

Sellers golf outing set
The Kim Sellers Foundation will sponsor its fifth annual fundaising golf outing June 20 at Grantwood Golf Course on Route 43 in Solon.
The foundation was started in 2000 by Sellers, a WZAK radio personality and Aurora resident, as a result of her being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1992.
Since that time, the foundation has had a strong presence in Northeast Ohio by providing educational programs to increase the awareness and to educate individuals about the care, treatment and potential effects of MS.
The efforts of the KSF have been supported over the years by individuals and organizations committed to the cause.
Registration for the outing will be at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10:30. The cost of $100 per person includes green fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch, dinner and prizes.
A $50 fee will be charged for dinner only. Hole sponsorships are available for $125.

Aurora Baseball League travel and tournament tryouts will be June 8 at Sunny Lake Park (noon to 3 for 12-14U and 4 to 7 p.m. for 9-11U) and July 20 from 9 a.m. to noon for 12-14U and 1 to 4 for 9-11 U.
A youth baseball camp will be June 10-12, the Captains Baseball Academy will run June 16-19 and this year’s Aurora tourney is June 26-29.
Meanwhile, registration for 2014 Aurora Youth Football is June 27 and player evaluations start July 15.
