Staff report

The Hudson girls track and field team is scheduled to make its debut at the GlenOak Relays April 5 in Canton.

The competition is set to begin at 9 a.m.

The Lady Explorers are led by first-year head coach Mike Schmidt, who has been an assistant with the Hudson boys and girls swimming and diving teams and the freshman football team.

Schmidt previously was an assistant with the freshman football and junior varsity baseball team at Brecksville-Broadview Heights. He also spent five years as the head boys and girls swimming and diving coach at Brecksville.

Schmidt's assistants are Hudson graduate Jenny Gamertsfelder (sprints and hurdles), Marty Sires (jumps), Dave Kohl (throwers), Ed Hoffmeier (distance) and Eric Stanley (pole vault).

The team has nearly 70 girls on the roster.

"I have high hopes for the season," Schmidt said. "I think we have some really talented girls this year and with the right training and hard work, I think we can move up in the NOC."

The Lady Explorers lost several key seniors from year ago.

The biggest losses were Caroline Sauers, who is now running at Ohio University in Athens, and Madison Hartline. Sauers and Hartline were members of the 3,200-meter relay team that advanced to the Division I regional competition.

Hudson finished sixth at the 2013 Northeast Ohio Conference River Division meet. Stow-Munroe Falls is the defending champion.

Junior Sarah Wolanske and sophomore Arielle Dalea were part of the 3,200 relay team that reached the regional meet last year.

Also returning are seniors Erica Evans, Ali Baylor, Kelcey McDevitt, Sam Komzak and Jordan Miller; juniors Mary Catherine Good and Heather Weaver; and sophomores Victoria Breeden and Janine Planchet.

Evans and Breeden were part of the 400 and 800 relay teams that placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at the 2013 NOC Valley Division meet. McDevitt also was part of the 800 relay team.

Baylor, Good and McDevitt were part of the fourth-place 1,600 relay team, while Miller finished fifth in the pole vault. Planchet took sixth in the 300 hurdles and Weaver placed 12th in both the shot-put and discus events.
