Local 6th-grade boys travel team having a fine season in 2013-14

Aurora's sixth-grade boys travel basketball team is having an incredible season. At last report it had posted a 26-1 record, and won a league championship and three area tournaments.

The squad won the Midwest Travel Basketball League title, finishing 11-0. It also posted a 5-0 record in the Stow Classic, including victories over Jackson Gold, Glen Oak, Jackson Purple and Twinsburg.

In the Aurora tournament, the locals beat Tallmadge, Mentor Red, Perry, Kenston and Mentor Black, and most recently won the Hudson Hoops Classic by overcoming a loss to Mentor Black in pool play and defeating that team in the championship 38-28.

"The boys have learned to play together as a team," said coach Bob Marchese. "They know each other's strengths and have really become a skilled team that knows how to win."

Greg Roche and Chaz Deptola helps coach the team, which will compete in two more tournaments before ending this season.

Players are Jack Deptola, Jake Marchese, Will Carpenter, Colin Krupinski, Lenny Feckner, R.C. Schmeider, Grant Huffman, Jack Roche, Ethan Hays and Reece Herendeen.

Board OKs coaching contracts

At its Feb. 24 meeting, the Aurora Board of Education awarded the following supplemental contracts to sports assistant coaches: Micky Colangelo, softball; Daniel Myers and Nick Nikto, baseball; Sean Black, Richard Buoncore and Shari Baechle Dowling, girls track.

Hunting licenses available in Ohio

Ohio's 2014-15 fishing, hunting and trapping licenses are now available. White-tailed deer and fall wild turkey hunting permits go on sale later in 2014.

Prices are unchanged from last season. Licenses and permits can be purchased online at www.wildohio.com and at many participating agents statewide. A complete list of agents can be found at the website listed above.

Deer harvest drops for 2013-14

Now that the 2013-14 deer hunting season is over in Ohio, the Ohio Division of Wildlife reports hunters killed 191,459 deer, a substantial decline from 218,910 in 2012-13.

"This year's white-tailed deer harvest indicates we are on target to maintain a high-quality deer herd," said Division of Wildlife chief Scott Zody. "Ohio remains one of the best deer hunting states in the nation."

Coshocton County saw the most deer harvested -- 6,270. It also led the way the year before with 7,413.

Rounding out the top 10 counties were: Tuscarawas 5,774, Licking 4,711, Muskingum 5,547, Guernsey 5,307, Ashtabula 4,981, Harrison 4,533, Knox 4,529, Carroll 4,203 and Athens 4,053.

Athletes can sign up at Harmon

Harmon School's spring sports practices (baseball, softball and track) will start March 10, and signups are being conducted and packets being passed out during lunch periods this week. Students must have a current physical on file to participate.
