Aurora -- The Greenmen hosted the 17-team Chagrin Valley Conference wrestling tournament Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and managed to capture runnerup honors behind Perry, compiling 176.5 points to the Pirates' 218.

Earlier in the week, Aurora lost to Uniontown Lake 44-26 in the third round of the state dual meet tourney.

Jarrod Brezovec dominated the 106-pound class to win the individual title, while Josh Whitelaw also claimed a championship at 113 pounds.

Brezovec opened with a pin, had a 10-0 major decision and won two more matches 11-4 and 11-1. Whitelaw recorded two pins (45 and 55 seconds) and then beat a foe 15-4.

Brian Evans at 160 and Josh Burger at heavyweight took second place. Evans had a 17-0 technical fall and 7-1 decision before losing 7-2 in the finals, while Burger had two pins and lost 7-1 in the finals.

A.J. Suchovsky (195) was third, winning five matches (two pins). Taking fourth were Danny Novak (120), Sal Petrash (126) and Bubba Arslanian (152).

Novak managed a pin, technical fall and 15-11 overtime win, Petrash had a 13-1 major decision and 8-2 decision and Arslanian had a technical fall, major decision and two decisions, including one in overtime.

Dean Hayden (220) claimed sixth place with one pin and two decisions.

"All 13 of our starters won at least one match and contributed to team points," said coach Dick Bliss. The Greenmen did not fill the 182-pound spot. Others getting wins were Carter Driscoll (132), Cole Gavin (138), Kevin Boysza (145) and J.T. Rose (170).

In the duals match against Lake, Burger recorded Aurora's only pin in 14 seconds, while Novak, Gavin, Brezovec and Evans earned wins and Justin Rosselot won by forfeit.

The varsity and JVs will travel to Maple Heights on Feb. 6 for a 6 p.m. contest on two mats.

Top wrestlers -- CVC champs Brezovec and Whitelaw; fastest fall -- Burger in 14 seconds; key match -- Arslanian with his back to wall was locked in a 6-6 match after one overtime and went on to win 11-6 against an Orange opponent.

Most takedowns -- Gavin with 15; coach's award -- Suchovsky with a strong performance; top practice wrestler -- Petrash; top sophomore effort -- Burger; top freshman effort -- Brezovec.

Most exciting match -- Novak faced a Hawken matman who had just recorded his 100th career win. He trailed 8-2 in the second period, recorded an escape and takedown to make it 8-5. After several escapes and takedowns, the match was tied at 11 and Novak had a 2-point near fall to win 15-11.
