team falls to Trinity

The Western Reserve Academy boys basketball team fell to 7-2 on the season after losing a 55-52 decision to Trinity Jan. 14 in Garfield Heights.

Trinity led 23-18 at halftime and were ahead until midway through the fourth quarter when the Pioneers took the lead.

Reserve led by as many as four points and Trinity rallied. WRA, which trailed by one at the time, missed two critical free throws with four seconds left.

Peter Barba led the Pioneers with 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting and an 8-of-8 effort from the line. He also had 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

John Roberts added 13 points and six assists for Reserve.

WRA was scheduled to visit Coventry Jan. 18 in Akron. Results were not available at press time.

The Pioneers are set to host Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Boesinger leads Ohio University

Hudson graduate Hannah Boesinger, a freshman on the Ohio University women's basketball team, had 18 points during the Bobcats' 76-59 victory over Kent State University.

The Mid-American Conference showdown took place Jan. 15 at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent.

Boesinger made 4 of 5 three-point shots and was 6 of 9 from the floor. She also made both of her foul shots and played 28 minutes.

Haney honored

Hudson head field hockey coach Jen Haney was one of 21 high school coaches from across the country to have been selected as 2013 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Association.

Haney recently was the recipient of the National Coach of the Year Award for spirit. She guided the Lady Explorers to a 13-3 record in 2013.

The Lady Explorers had a 12-game winning streak last season.
