Kariotis to be honoredTallmadge graduate Bob Kariotis, 57, will be inducted into the Allegheny-Kiski Valley (Pa.) Sports Hall of Fame June 2 at Clarion Hotel in New Kensington (Pa.).The ceremony is set to begin at 7 p.m. Kariotis registered more than 400 victories coaching track and soccer at Burrell High School (Pa.). His track teams have reached the final four three times and have made nine playoff appearances, won five sectional titles and two Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League titles.Kariotis led the 1995 Burrell track team to the Western Pennsylvania Team Championship after finishing as the runner-up the year before.Kariotis also started the soccer program at Burrell and was the soccer coach at Riverview (Pa.) where his 200 team finished fourth in the state rankings.He soccer teams reached the WPIAL final four twice and those programs have four athletes playing on the collegiate level.Kariotis is a 1967 Tallmadge graduate. His parents, Tony and Angie Kariotis, live in Tallmadge.McWhirter places fifthin kart raceTallmadge resident Jacob McWhirter, who drives for Victory Racing, competed in his first World Karting Association Regional at the .7-mile, 10-turn Circleville Raceway Park. This was the first race of the Great Lakes Sprint Series. Race day concluded with McWhirter finishing fifth. Through the two practice sessions, qualifying, heat and feature races, McWhirter set personal bests each time on the track. The feature race had McWhirter running less than 50-second laps with speeds at around 50 miles per hour.McWhirter was expected to race over the Memorial Day weekend at Barberton Speedway. He is expected to race under the lights for the first time this season.Hoops camp offeredThe Blue Devil Boys Basketball Camp is scheduled to take place June 11 through 14 at the Tallmadge Rec Center.The camp is for boys in grades 3-9. For grades 3-5, the camp is set to take place from 9 a.m. to noon each day. For grades 6-9, the camp is slated to take place from 1 to 4 p.m.The cost is $55 before May 31 and $70 after June 1.
