by Frank AcetoAssociate Sports EditorHead boys track and field coach Rick Lieberman has been involved with Cuyahoga Falls for a long time.He just had his finest moment May 18 at Ravenna Stadium. The Black Tigers finished second with 83 points at the Ravenna Division I District Meet. Copley won the competition with 98.5 points and Solon placed third with 82 points."We've had kids go to the state meet a number of times and we've had guys on the podium," Lieberman said. "But this was the highlight of my coaching career."Falls sent 11 athletes to the Austintown Fitch Regional, which was scheduled to conclude May 25. Results were not available at press time. The Black Tigers won five events. Rob Jones won two of them and was part of a winning relay. He placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.81 seconds and first in the 300 hurdles (39.89).Rob Jones joined Mike Dugger Jake Hall and Christian Fossett on the first-place 800 relay team (season-best 1:29.62). That team qualified for finals May 24 at the regional meet. Rob Jones, Dugger, Hall and Christian Fossett made up the 400 relay team that placed third (43.84). The top four performers in each event and top four relay teams qualified for the Fitch Regional. The 3,200 relay team's first-place time of 8:12.85 May 16 really got Falls going, according to Lieberman. That team consisted of Bryce Pulley, Danny Stuart, Nate Slaughter and Chrisean Fossett."The 4x8's win gave everyone a big lift," Lieberman said. "They really set the tone for the rest of the meet. On the first day, we qualified in everything but the 100 and 400."Mike Baxter won the 3,200 with a clocking of 9:44.96. His teammate, Nate Slaughter, placed third (9:48.85). Slaughter got some redemption after placing fifth in the 1,600 (4:31.78)."Mike said he was going to win before the race started," Lieberman said. "He was bound and determined and ran like a man possessed. He's a very strong competitor. Nate bounced back even though the 1,600 took a lot out of him."Also advancing was Dugger, who took fourth in the 200 (23.0). Others who placed in the top eight were the following:1,600 relay: Alex Jones, Stuart, Pulley and Chrisean Fossett, sixth, 3:34.14800: Pulley, fifth, 1:59.87; and Chrisean Fossett, seventh, 2:00.811,600 relay: Alex Jones, Stuart, Pulley and Chrisean Fossett, sixth, 3:34.14Discus: Josh Straight, seventh, 125 feetShot put: Vinnie Cox, eighth, 44-3"Josh and Vinnie placing in the discus and shot put were valuable points," Lieberman said. "The 4x4 got three very important points. Those points may not look like a lot, but they helped the team a great deal."Lieberman believes he has some state-caliber performers. He certainly was going to find out at Fitch."Fitch is like a mini state meet," he said. "[Cleveland] Glenville is the four-time defending state champs and Cleveland Heights is right behind them. If you get out of Austintown, you have an excellent chance of getting on the podium."E-mail: faceto@recordpub.comPhone: 330-686-3914
