Recently, the Ohio House passed HB 233, a bill that allows people to carry concealed, loaded handguns into schools, on college campuses, in bars and onto private property.
As a mother, teacher, and concerned citizen, I have to question the intent and logic of this bill. More guns in more places has not made our nation safer.
Despite the fact that we have more guns than citizens, we live in a country with a gun homicide rate 25 times that of other developed countries.
I am especially disappointed that Rep. Kristina Roegner voted for this bill, despite opposition testimony from the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and others. Please contact your Ohio senator and urge them to vote down this dangerous bill and insist that our representatives start looking for common sense ways to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in our country. 93 American lives a day lost is 93 too many.
