THUMBS UP to the organizers of the first 12-23 Classic, a charity basketball game which raised more than $10,000 for the Humble-Hackim Scholarship Fund. This fund was named after Kevin Humble and Lance Hackim, two Cuyahoga Falls High School basketball players who died in a car accident in February 1988. Two other student-athletes -- Bill Scelza and Marc Fugarino -- were paralyzed from the waist down in the crash. Two of their teammates, Bill Hodson and Scott Davis, along with Judy Ray, activities secretary at Cuyahoga Falls High School, organized the Nov. 23 game that pitted the current Falls High basketball squad against Falls High alumni players. Scelza and Fugarino led the alumni team on to the court and spoke to the crowd before the game began. Those who attended the event described it as "emotional," "amazing," and "long overdue." About 1,600 people were on hand, and organizers are planning to make this an annual event. We commend Hodson, Davis and Ray for their hard work in putting together an event that united the community.
