Charles (Chuck) Douglas Herb, 66, passed away peacefully in his home in Twinsburg, OH on Sept. 30, 2016, five months after being diagnosed with cancer. He was born on Oct. 21, 1949 in Conneaut, OH to the late Robert and Ruth (Akerley) Herb. Chuck married his beloved wife, Carol Ann Jussila, on Sept. 27, 1975. They celebrated their 41st anniversary last Tuesday surrounded by their daughters and their families. Chuck graduated from Conneaut High School in 1967. He was a mechanic at various businesses and the Conneaut Street Department before he and Carol opened Chuck’s Auto Service in 1980, serving the community for 28 years. He was an independent tow truck operator for AAA and the Conneaut Police Department until 2012. They were also owners of H&M Storage in West Springfield, PA. He was active in the Conneaut community serving as a past president of the former Conneaut Exchange Club. Chuck was instrumental in starting Conneaut’s first minor league girls’ softball league in the early 1990s, serving as a CLYO softball coach for his daughters’ teams for many years and as an assistant coach of Conneaut High School’s Division II State Softball Champions in 2000. Chuck was best known for his work ethic, positive attitude, sense of humor and devotion to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, especially attending their many sporting events and activities. He proudly restored three award-winning hot rods - a 1931 Ford, 1953 Studebaker and 1959 Rambler - and showcased them at car shows throughout the United States. He was a member of Ss. Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church in Twinsburg. Left behind to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his wife and caregiver Carol; loving daughters Mary Beth (Michael) Holdford and Kelly (Garett) Gaydosh; grandchildren Braden, Matthew and Gavin Holdford and Laina and Sophia Gaydosh; son Ryan Herb; sister Judith (late Robert) Kent; brothers Irus (Bonnie) Herb and William (Nancy) Herb; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Ruth Herb; his in-laws Helge and Mary Alice Jussila; and his brother Michael. Calling hours were held at Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St. in Conneaut, on Tuesday, Oct. 4. A Mass of Christian burial held on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at St. Mary Church. in Conneaut. Memorial donations may be made to Ss. Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, Hospice of the Western Reserve, or any charity of one’s choice in Chuck’s memory.
