U.S. Army veteran; Our lady of Victory Church member; enjoyed caring for his yard, travel

Mike Lampers, 79, died Feb. 10, 2014, surrounded by his family.

The son of Nick and Antonia Lampers and the brother of Andrew (Norma) and Theodore, Mr. Lampers was born Jan. 14, 1935, in the village of Vovikes on the Greek island of Kefalonia. Raised in Akron, he was a graduate of Hower High School, where he was an All City basketball player, and the University of Akron, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and charter president of the Society for the Advancement of Management. He also served in the U.S. Army and did his graduate work at Indiana University before returning to Ohio, eventually becoming comptroller and vice president of Saalfield Publishing, and later an entrepreneur.

Mr. Lampers settled in Tallmadge, where he lived for 50 years and became a member of Our Lady of Victory Church. He loved his family, old movies, working in his expansive and meticulously cared for yard, playing and watching sports, and traveling the world with his family. He was a master storyteller, a jazz aficionado, and a delight in the eyes of every child who ever met him. Mr. Lampers was very proud of his Greek heritage and carried with him a love of history all his life. He was also a generous man who is remembered by friends and family for always giving of himself and sharing his good fortune with all.

Mr. Lampers is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly; his daughter and son-in-law, Leann and Jeff Smith; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Patricia Lampers; and his two grandsons, Parker and Grant Smith; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
