Bernard John Fuchs

Our Lady of Victory Church member; served on Tallmadge City Council, Planning Commission, honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and as a Distinguished Citizen

Bernard John Fuchs, 80, died Feb. 7, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Fuchs was born in Akron and lived his life in the Akron-Tallmadge area. He worked in sales for the Valenite Corp., retiring in 1999 after 25 years of service. He was a 1952 graduate of Stow High School, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Tallmadge Jaycees, where he served as secretary, and later as president. He received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award as "Young Man of the Year." In 1967, he was selected as one of the "Outstanding Young Men of America." He also served on the Board of Management for the Tallmadge Branch of the YMCA/YWCA. He worked the sidelines on the chain crew for Tallmadge football from 1995 to 2012; was a member of Our Lady of Victory Charitable Funds Committee and served as acolyte for funeral Masses at the church; and was a member of the Tallmadge Rotary Club, serving as secretary in 2011. Mr. Fuchs volunteered for Ohio Reads, Mobile Meals and Akron Hunger Center.

An active member of the Tallmadge community in a variety of capacities, Mr. Fuchs was appointed to City Council and served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for 18 years, five years as chairman. He was a member of Tallmadge Business and Industrial Development Commission as a Trustee. He was appointed to the Civil Service Commission in 1991 and served several terms as chairman. He was also selected as one of the city's "Distinguished Citizen over the past 50 years" during the Bicentennial Celebration in 2007. In 2012, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the city of Tallmadge.

Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ann (nee Van Brimmer) Fuchs; his parents, Carl and Eva (nee Morrell) Fuchs; a daughter, Laura Lee; and a brother, Norman, he is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Janice Ann (David) Braun of Aurora; son, Steven John Fuchs of Stow; two sisters, Kathleen (Edward) Berg of Cuyahoga Falls and Carla (Fred) Jennings of Barberton; and grandchildren, Hannah, Aaron and Christian Braun.
