Was longtime optometrist

Services were Nov. 13 at Disciples Christian Church in Cleveland Heights for Dr. William H. Knapp, 88, of Aurora, who died Nov. 8, 2012.

Born March 15, 1924 to Henry and Irene (Wick) Knapp, he attended Shaw High School before studying at Case Western Reserve University and Oberlin College, where he competed on the football, basketball and baseball teams.

He went on to serve as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then worked as an optometrist for 55 years, starting in downtown Cleveland and relocating to Aurora, where he spent 25 years.

He dedicated much of his time to giving free eye examinations at local elementary schools and co-founded a Christmas event that delivered gifts to underprivileged children. He was a member of Aurora Country Club and an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jane P. (Peterson); children Pamela (John) Helmstadter of Alexander, Maine and William Wick (Valerie) Knapp of Worthington; and grandchildren Hillary K. (Chris) Spears and Steven W. Knapp.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Mulholland.
