Police Chief in Put-in-Bay

John B. Griffith, age 81, of Ft. Myers, Fla., died Sept. 30, 2012.

Mr. Griffith was born on Sept. 9, 1931 in Akron, and attended Cuyahoga Falls High School. He graduated in 1950 and enlisted in the Navy right after high school. After receiving an honorable discharge he returned home and attended Kent State University in Kent. Mr. Griffith later joined the Summit County Sheriff's Department and later retired from the Summit County Adult Probation Division. After retirement he continued to work in law enforcement and became the Chief of Police in Put-in-Bay. He later moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., where he was employed by the Edison Mall as the Chief of Security.

Mr. Griffith was preceded in death by his youngest son, Gene B. Griffith, and leaves his eldest son, Scott W. Griffith, of Florida; companion Dottie Jones of Florida, brother Marion (Jackie) Griffith of New Hampshire; sister-in-law Carol (Bill) Curley of Florida; grandchildren Patrick Griffith of Georgia, Wyatt Griffith of Florida, and Taylor Hargis of Alabama.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the Anthony Funeral Home McGowan-Reid and Santos Chapel, 247 Stow Ave., Cuyahoga Falls. Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. on Nov. 17, at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Cuyahoga Falls.
