Joseph Hobert Johnson, 84, died at his residence Oct. 22, 2012.

Mr. Johnson was born on Oct. 7, 1928 in Akron, the son of the late Joseph and Estelle (Upton) Johnson. Before residing in Cuyahoga Falls, Mr. Johnson lived in Tallmadge and Indiana, where he worked as a chemist and an environmental control engineer at GenCorp.

Mr. Johnson was a veteran of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division. He was a 1967 graduate of the University of Akron with an associate's degree in chemical technology. He was involved in many activities and had many interests. His passion was sailing -- He had sailed to the Bahamas. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, leatherworking and cooking, especially bread making.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Carol Lee of 51 years, and their children, Barbara Jo (Kim) Cain, of Indianapolis, Beth Ann (Scott Smith) Johnson, of N. Canton, and Jeff (Lea) Johnson, of Indiana; sister, Lottie Ann Hoff; grandchildren, Jonathon and Eric Veasey, Steven Birnell, and Amanda Rae Johnson; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Caleb, Raven, Elijah and Joshua; canine companion "Katie," and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infants, Dorothy Starn in 1961, and Michael Alan in 1963; brother, James D. Johnson; sister, Wanda Parris, and brother-in-law, Paul Hoff.

A funeral service took place in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, the Rev. Dave Brown officiating. Interment was in Northampton Cemetery, Cuyahoga Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to Bailey Road Christian Church, 3200 W. Bailey Road, Cuyahoga Falls 44221.
