MACEDONIA — The city is offering the Macedonia Family Recreation Center, 1494 East Aurora Road, as a cooling station until 7 p.m. Wednesday for members of the public who lack air conditioning and need to get in out of the heat.

The fire department will have bottled water available for those that need it and nonmembers will have access to the lobby, the activity room off the pool, and the game area, which includes shuffle board and ping pong and pool tables.

The Nordonia Hills City School District has closed Northfield, Ledgeview and Lee Eaton Wednesday because of the heat, and St. Barnabas School also is closed.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement advising the public that the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will cause heat index values to reach the upper 90s to near 100 again this afternoon. For most locations this will be the fourth consecutive day with temperatures topping the 90-degree mark combined with high humidity.

Be aware of the cumulative effect that the heat has on you and others. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity and take frequent breaks if you must be outside. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Remember to check on the elderly and people without air conditioning. Also make sure outdoor pets have fresh drinking water and shade from the direct sunlight.
