Meet-and-greet sessions are planned at some Aurora schools as the new school year approaches.
Craddock Elementary’s event will be 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 13, and Leighton Elementary’s will be 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 for grades 4 and 5 only.
Miller Elementary’s session will be 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14, and Leighton’s session for third grade will be 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14.
School officials say the sessions offer a good opportunity for parents and students to tour the building, find classrooms and lockers, drop off school supplies and meet their new teachers.
Meanwhile, new student and ninth-grade orientation at Aurora High will be 7:40 to 10:40 a.m. Aug. 14 in the auditorium.
School buses will run their regular morning pickup schedule for these students, and the buses will be available to transport students home after orientation ends. Students should bring their class schedules.
The first day of classes for all students (except preschool and kindergarten) is Aug. 15.
Kindergarten classes will begin for students with last names beginning with A to L on Aug. 15, while the first day for those with last names M to Z is Aug. 16. All preschool students will start classes Aug. 20.
Harmon Middle School will host a back to school open house for parents as follows: sixth grade — Aug. 15; seventh grade — Aug. 21; and eighth grade — Aug. 23. Time for all of the open houses is 7 p.m.
The open houses give parents the opportunity to tour the school, follow their students’ class schedules, meet the teachers and gain valuable information for the coming school year.
Parents are reminded that all students entering the seventh grade are required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine (also known as MCV4, menveo or menactra) in addition to one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diptheria and acellular pertussis).
All students entering the 12th grade are required to have a second dose of meningococcal vaccine prior to entry. If the first dose of MCV4 was administered on or after a student’s 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.
Meanwhile, the Aurora schools’ PTO is sponsoring a Kalahari Resort fundraiser on Sept. 22. Rooms with two queen beds will cost $149, and the price includes waterpark passes.
A portion from each room booked will benefit the Aurora PTOs. Just ask for the Aurora schools’ group rate when making reservations at 1-877-525-2427.
