Authorities closed off a section of East Tallmadge Avenue on Tuesday night while the Akron Fire Department responded to a fire at the former Midway Lanes in the city’s Chapel Hill area.
The road is expected to be closed through Wednesday's morning rush hour.
A preliminary report from the department said it was notified of the fire at 10:26 p.m.
Motorists and onlookers were advised to avoid the area while crews battled dangerous conditions.
Firefighters remained on the scene early Wednesday. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
The bowling alley, which had been a recreational fixture for more than 50 years, closed its doors in June 2014 when its owners merged operations with Stonehedge Family Fun Center on North Hill.
