Area safety forces from Macedonia, Northfield Village, Sagamore Hills and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office were on hand to meet the public for the annual National Night Out at the Northfield Center Target store Tuesday. The event included police and fire department personnel and vehicles, and a bounce house for children.
National Night Out is designed to connect the police with the community they serve and to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts. It takes place on the first Tuesday of August.
The event has been held annually in some communities since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.
It began with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. The first National Night Out involved 2.5 million residents in 400 communities in 23 states. National Night Out 2017 involved 38.6 million residents in more than 16,000 communities in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
