There are only 11 days until the 16th annual Charlestown Summer Festival and Car Show! Make plans to attend from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Charlestown Township Park on Rock Spring Road, just north of Newton Falls Road.
The entertainment begins at 4 p.m. with a Mad Science Show in the pavilion. You won’t want to miss that! Then at 5 p.m., a Portage County Sheriff’s Deputy will conduct a K-9 demonstration, which everyone enjoys. Finally at 6 p.m., Ogura Martial Arts will perform a demonstration. The car show always has a lot of great entries. Awards will be given out at 6:30 p.m.
For those of you with a competitive nature, the Potty Racers are back! Try your hand at racing around the basketball court with a friend. You can also give the climbing wall a try. There will be an obstacle course and a bounce house combo with many fun activities for our younger set. Tickets for these attractions are $1 per ticket or $5 for a wrist band for unlimited use for the full four hours of the festival.
New this year is a petting zoo with pony rides. This is free! There will be a fire truck to explore and a "fire" to put out with a real fire hose! When you get hungry, head on over to the United Methodist Mens tent. They will be cooking up sausage sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers along with fries and other sides. Want a snack? How about some kettle corn or a Hawaiian Shave Ice. If you want to take home something sweet, check out the the bake sale table.
Stop by the township booth and buy a ticket or two for the Grand Prize basket. For $5 a ticket, you could take home an Entertainment basket with gift certificates to local restaurants with a value of more than $300. There will be a Chinese auction for other themed gift baskets. And finally, there will be several vendor booths for you to check out. As you can see the Activity Committee has been working hard to make this a great afternoon for "kids" of all ages. Hope to see you there!
Edinburg United Church will be offering another session of the Summer Reading Club. The club is for all students grades kindergarten through fourth and is free. They will meet Aug. 1, 8 and 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Edinburg Church and the Charlestown Town Hall. Rick and Janet Burt held their annual July Fourth picnic with 66 people enjoying the fun. With so many little ones in attendance this year, they decided to do something different. So they created a children’s play area of sand boxes, wading pool, swing, play kitchen and a full size bounce house.
Of course the pool was enjoyed by all ages and there was always the nine-hole golf course which winds around their yard and the neighbors, Rance and Susie Robenstine. The food was delicious. In addition to hamburgers and hot dogs, everyone brought a dish to share. The DeRemers brought their shave ice machine which helped everyone stay cool in the 90-plus degree day.
Sincere condolences to the family of Margaret Watters, who passed away last month.
