MUNROE FALLS — Drivers should prepare to see plenty of orange barrels during the next 12 months when about $1.1 million worth of road repairs will occur.

City Council on Tuesday night approved awarding a $747,387 contract to Perrin Asphalt Co. for concrete street improvements and a $372,760 deal to Karvo Co. for asphalt street improvements.

Service Director Jim Bowery said one road — Silver Valley Boulevard — will be repaved and the other streets will be repaired.

The start date for the work will be determined when the contracts are signed, said Bowery, who added that "at least 50 percent of the work is required to be completed on or before Nov. 1, 2018."

Bowery said the city engineer has established July 1, 2019 as the completion date for all the work.

Finance Director Karen Reynolds said the projects are being funded by a $1.1 million loan from the State Infrastructure Bank, which is operated by the Ohio Department of Transportation. She added the city will then begin paying back the 3 percent interest loan with road and bridge levy money in about a year and a half. Reynolds noted the city will have eight and a half years to repay the loan and added the plan is to pay about $160,000 per year.

Reynolds said city voters approved the road and bridge levy in November 2016 and the city began receiving those funds in 2017.

"We don’t have enough funding to do everything that was identified," noted Bowery.

Bowery said if Council wants to fix more roads they would need to fund it from an account other than the road and bridge levy fund.
