A former Buchtel High School teacher was sentenced to three years in prison this week for charges stemming from a three-year relationship with a Buchtel student that resulted in a child.

Laura Lynn Cross, 37, of Tallmadge, pleaded guilty in March to three counts of sexual battery, third-degree felonies.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tammy O’Brien sentenced Cross to three years in prison on each of the counts, with the sentences to be served concurrently. She also designated Cross a Tier 3 sex offender, which means she will be required to register her address every 90 days for the rest of her life.

Larry Whitney, Cross’ attorney, said the resolution of Cross’ case was the result of several months of discussions between him and Assistant Summit County Prosecutor Jennie Shuki.

“We came to a resolution both the state and my defendant agreed to,” he said.

Whitney noted that his client will be able to request an early release from prison after serving six months.

Prosecutors said Cross began a three-year sexual relationship with the boy in 2014, when he was 16. At the time, the teen was living with Cross, who was his legal guardian.

She gave birth to the teen’s son in December 2015. The child was adopted at birth.

The teen’s mother filed a complaint with Akron police in June 2015 about the affair. She also contacted Summit County prosecutors and police in Tallmadge, where her son was living with Cross.

Cross was charged in August 2017. She lost her teaching license.
