AKRON — On Thursday, University of Akron President Matthew Wilson was named a finalist for the same position at Utah Valley University.

"The Board was aware that President Wilson might be included in a different university’s search for a president," said Roland H. Bauer, Chair of UA’s Board of Trustees, in a media release. "We wish him well in this current opportunity. As we have stated previously, we — the Board and University of Akron leadership — are focused on building on our many strengths, addressing our challenges and making UA even more distinctive. That commitment is shown in our expedited process to select someone to serve as interim president, and it will enable us to have a smooth transition and launch a national search."

Utah Valley University posted on its website that Wilson was one of four finalists to become the university’s next president. The other finalists include Bradley J. Cook, the current provost at Southern Utah University; John Rosenberg, the Washington Irving Professor of Spanish and American Relations at Brigham Young University; and Astrid S. Tuminez, the regional director for corporate, external and legal affairs in Southeast Asia for Microsoft.

The four finalists are scheduled to meet with the public April 19.

The new Utah Valley University president will take over from current President Matthew S. Holland, who has taken a position as a mission president in the North Carolina Raleigh Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints starting in July 2018. He will leave June 2018. Holland has been with UVU since 2009.

Wilson also had been one of the four final candidates for the president’s seat at the University of Central Florida. UCF named Dale Whittaker, its current provost and executive vice president, the next head of the university.

Regardless of whether Wilson gets the position in Utah, he will step down as The University of Akron president on July 31, a decision that was announced in late March. According to information provided by the university, Wilson plans to re-join the faculty in the university’s law school.

Wilson, who lives in Hudson, was named the university’s 17th president in October 2016, after serving as interim president for about three months, according to information provided by The University of Akron. He replaced Dr. Scott L. Scarborough, who served from July 2014 to May 2016.
