The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is seeking volunteers for its 2018 season. Orientation for new volunteers will be Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Fitzwater Maintenance Yard. Orientation is a requirement for volunteers, including trainmen, concessionaires and servers. The program will be about an hour and a half and will cover the basic information about volunteering for the railroad.
There will also be a training session on board the train Jan. 20 that will last about three and a half hours. To become a volunteer at the railroad, visit cvsr.com and complete the online application.
CVNP hosts concert series
• Mountain Heart has been revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The bandwill perform Jan. 26 at Happy Days Lodge, 500 West Streetsboro Street in Peninsula. The band comprises of top call studio professionals at every position, unmatched energy and a keen sense of dynamics.
Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at forcvnp.org/?events. The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park partners with the National Park Service to bring live music year-round to Cuyahoga Valley National Park at three park locations.
• Master fiddler Ed Caner has performed alongside dozens of local and national acts and is a founding member of his own band, Hey Mavis. For this intimate Jan. 21 performance, Caner will be joined by special guest David Mayfield. Mayfield has performed with The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield and at the Bonnaroo festival. This singer-songwriter, band leader and Grammy-nominated producer stepped out of the sideman shadows with his 2011 album "The David Mayfield Parade," and his follow-up "Good Man Down" was self-released and funded with a surprisingly successful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled its initial goal of $18,000.
On the heels of that success, Mayfield has partnered with Compass Records, a label that Playboy Magazine calls "Nashville’s hippest alternative label."
The concert will be at Hines Hill Conference Center, 1403 West Hines Hill Road, Peninsula, in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at forcvnp.org/events.
