TWINSBURG — A North Ridgefield man charged in the shooting death of a Twinsburg Township woman in Solon last year has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

A trial for 31-year-old Matthew R. Desha that was scheduled to begin today was canceled following a Nov. 8 prosecutor's motion and Desha was referred to a court psychiatrist for a "sanity evaluation," according to Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas records.

A Nov. 29 pretrial hearing is scheduled for Desha, at which time a new trial may be scheduled, according to court records.

Desha is facing murder, felony assault, and discharge of a firearm charges in the Aug. 27, 2016 death of 53-year-old Deborah Pearl. According to Solon police, Desha drove left of center on Solon Road and through a red light at Richmond Road before crashing into Pearl's vehicle. Police said that according to eyewitness statements, Desha allegedly got out of his vehicle and fired four or five rounds at Pearl's vehicle with an AR-15 rifle. After Pearl got out of her vehicle, Desha then allegedly fired several more rounds at her, emptying his gun, police said. Pearl was later pronounced dead at University Hospitals Bedford Medical Center.

Police said Pearl told them he has bipolar disorder, as well as post traumatic stress disorder from his military service as a U.S. Marine in Iraq.
