When the Hudson schools open for the 2017-18 school year, students at McDowell will be greeted by a new principal. The district also welcomed a new athletic director, Bryan Bedford; a new high school unit principal, Corey Hoynacke; and a new middle school assistant principal, Jamie Ganz.
The first day for most students is Aug. 16; however, some kindergartners will start Aug. 17; call Evamere for details. At the high school, freshman also start Aug. 16, and the rest of the students start on Aug. 17.
The Freshman Orientation program started last year, said Sheryl Sheatzley, manager of Communications and Alumni Outreach.
"It was good for the students to have a day to acclimate to the high school, meet their teachers and learn about all the opportunities available to them before all 1,600 students arrived," Sheatzley said.
New this year is the launching of the Drug Free America Club at the high school, Sheatzley said.
"It's a great program and has had statistically great results," she said. "The program includes students who volunteer to take a drug test. There are incentives for success, and encouragement for students to make great choices. It's a program to watch."

"One of the things that typically happens at the beginning of the year is our parents don't remember the processes or passwords for accessing their student information," she said. "We post the ‘How To’ Guide each year on our website for their convenience."
