MUNROE FALLS — The public will have the opportunity to tour the new Mulberry Gardens Memory Care when the skilled nursing facility hosts a grand opening on Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Located at 47 Steeplechase Lane, the memory care center is a branch of Mulberry Gardens Gracious Retirement and Assisted Living, located next door at 395 S. Main St. The fact that Mulberry Gardens Memory Care is free-standing makes it unique, says Mulberry Gardens administrator Maryann Ervin.
“The management team and all of the staff that work there will not have to be divided and go into another section of the building,” said Ervin. “It's all memory care. So they're going to get very specific memory care training.” She said staff members will receive additional training for dementia, something that smaller facilities do not have.
Ervin said the new facility is “gorgeous” and has four courtyards, two dining rooms and several activity rooms. It also offers special rooms to bring back memories for residents. For the men, there is a “garage” equipped with a garage door, workbenches and hand tools. For the women, a room was furnished to look like a baby's nursery complete with a rocking chair and bassinet.
“It's very homelike and warm inside,” Ervin said. “It's exquisitely decorated.”
The new facility will have its own management team, Ervin said, and 24-7 nursing. Residents will be served three meals and three snacks each day, she said noting dementia patients tend to burn a lot of calories in a day's time. There will be one resident's assistant for every seven residents, she said. The total number of employees will be between 65 and 70, full time and part time. The response to the new memory care center has been good, Ervin said, since it broke ground last fall. Deposits have been made on more than half of the facility's 65 apartments.
Ervin looks forward to the grand opening and being able to showcase the new memory care center. “We're going to be able let people inside and tour it,” she said. “We're excited and prepared for a good turnout. There's going to be lots of food and a nice buffet.”
“We're very excited to get it open,” she added. “It's very needed in the community.”
