'Free the Falls' series continues in Gorge Metro Park

There is a push to remove the dam in Gorge Metro Park, and Summit Metro Parks supports the efforts. Next month, park district staff will host another installment in the "Free the Falls" series in Cuyahoga Falls to educate the public about the history of dams, why they can negatively impact the environment, and the removal process.

On July 22, from noon to 2 p.m., at Gorge Metro Park (1160 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls), visitors can hear from Summit Metro Parks staff and Bill Zawiski from the Ohio EPA about past and future efforts to study sediments behind the Gorge Dam, why their proper management directly impacts Lake Erie, and learn about the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. After a walk along Glens Trail, presenters will answer questions while participants eat their brown-bag lunches brought from home.

The 58-foot high Gorge Dam is one of the largest unresolved water quality problems for the Cuyahoga River. Removing the dam and its contaminated sediment will restore the original grandeur of the Gorge, revealing the city's namesake falls.
