TWINSBURG -- Twinsburg Seniors, a non-profit organization, has stepped up to form a new lunch program for those 55 and older at the Twinsburg Senior Center.

The program, titled Meet 'n' Eat, was created in February to replace Mobile Meals after that organization announced earlier this year it would cut funding in Twinsburg. Meet 'n' Eat serves qualifying seniors in Twinsburg and Twinsburg Township.

Twinsburg Parks and Recreation Director Derek Schroeder said between 15 to 25 people once counted on the food provided by Mobile Meals.

"The Meet 'N' Eat program stepped in to replace the need for that group of individuals about 10 to 20 seniors daily," said Ryan Kennedy wit Twinsburg Parks and Rec. "Losing the program all together would have put a burden on the individuals who were dependent on Mobile Meals."

The Meet 'n' Eat program serves about 10 seniors per day and interest continues to grow on a weekly basis, serving those who have a financial need.

The shutdown was a corporate decision from Meals on Wheels.

To continue providing this service, Twinsburg Seniors are organizing a fundraising campaign to raise $15,000 for a full year of meals. Donations are accepted online at TwinsburgRecreation.com under the Senior Center page or checks made out to Twinsburg Seniors can be dropped off at the Community Center, 10260 Ravenna Road. Individuals or companies also are encouraged to offer their support.

Initial response to the program has been "outstanding" and community members are welcome to get involved to support the cause, Kennedy said. Supporters include Mr. Chicken, Twinsburg Township and the city of Twinsburg.

"Mr. Chicken has, since we've asked them to, provided a full meal to the seniors," Twinsburg Mayor Ted Yates said July 13.

Meals include a main entre, side dish, vegetable and fruit, and are monitored by a licensed dietician, Kennedy said.

In addition, volunteers are also needed daily for about 1 1/2 hours to help prep and serve lunch. For details, contact Laura Siefer, senior recreation coordinator, at 330-963-8722.
