MACEDONIA What area residents know as Builders Emporium Inc. has a new owner and they want people to know they are open for business.

BEi Supply and Rental, as the firm is now known, has been in the community since 1970. Jacquie and Ian Kubicki took the business over on March 27, but they are no strangers to BEi.

Ian has been working for the Golub family, who previously owned the business, since 2009 after leaving the Marine Corps, where he was a C-130 flight engineer.

Jacquie's sister. Julie, is married to David Galob, who together with his brother Larry ran the business since the 1980s when their father Phil Galob, who started the business in 1970 died. Jacquie said David is still involved in the business and between him, his brother, Ian and others the family has more than 150 years of business knowledge to share with customers.

Ian's equipment and repair knowledge led him to expand the equipment rental side of the business, which now boasts a $500,000 fleet available for rental by residents, municipalities or businesses. He said he loves the business and felt it was a good fit.

The store employees about 20 people and has repeat customers who have shopped there for nearly 40 years.

"When Phil started the business, people came here to buy their tools," Jacquie said. "He picked this location because the lumber yard was right up the street."

She said when big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's sprouted up in the area, the tool selling side started to hurt a little, so BEi began a tool rental program, which has doubled in size since Ian came on board and began expanding it.

"The rental idea saved the company," she said.

She said they have a full-time mechanic who tends to the fleet by maintaining the equipment and responding if anything should break down. According to Jacquie, the boom lift is probably the most popular piece of rental equipment, followed by the excavator and chippers. She said the store will occasionally sell used equipment, and interested parties can inquire within.

Jacquie said while the big box stores stock more volume of items they don't have the variety that BEi does. She said BEi is good at customizing.

"We are good on custom stuff -- we can figure out how to find it," she said. "While we stock mostly industrial tools, we will cater to resident's needs as well.

"People don't realize we are open to the public. We take care of our residents."

BEi is an ACE Hardware affiliate store. She said they stock and can order anything electrical, plumbing, hardware, doors, paint, screens and more. BEi also has specials every month.

The Highland Road store is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
