A Stow woman accused of stealing nearly $30,000 from the Streetsboro Home Depot last year has pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge.
Dionne L. Smith, 31, of 2380 Echo Valley Drive, entered a guilty plea June 7 to one count of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, before Common Pleas Judge Becky Doherty.
A charge of tampering with records, also a fourth-degree felony, was dismissed on a motion by the Portage County Prosecutor's Office.
Smith remains free on bond pending a pre-sentence investigation. She faces the possibility of probation or a maximum of 18 months in prison at sentencing.
Streetsboro police investigated Smith after the Home Depot home improvement store at 9585 Route 14 after its loss prevention manager reported the thefts. The investigation revealed Smith was creating fraudulent returns on merchandise, converting the value into store credit cards and keeping them, police said.
The incidents took place over a one-year span between January 2016 and January this year, Streetsboro Police Chief Darin Powers said.
