Silver Lake Mayor Bernie Hovey will be inducted into the Belleville High School Distinguished Graduate Hall of Fame later in the spring.
Hovey is a 1965 graduate of the high school, which is located in Belleville, Mich.
"I feel very honored to receive this award, and am obviously pleased," said Hovey.
The mayor said he was nominated for the honor and then a committee made the selection. He noted the school has selected distinguished graduates each year since the late 1990s.
The award was based on achievements logged both in high school and after high school, according to Hovey.
During high school, Hovey said he was in the top ten of his class, and served as vice-president of his class, National Honor Society president, and German Club president. He also participated in JETS Club (junior engineering technical society), United Nations Club, as well as the junior and senior class plays.
Following high school, Hovey said his achievements as a coach and an elected official were also recognized by the committee. As a coach, Hovey led the 1982 Kent Roosevelt hockey team to a state championship. Hovey has served as mayor of the village since 2006 and served as a Village Council member prior to that.
