HUDSON -- A local teacher recently named one of the best at her craft in Ohio will be recognized March 31 by her peers at the Ohio Foreign Language Association conference in Columbus.

Rebecca Wiehe, who has taught Spanish at Hudson High School for 14 of her 23 years of teaching, was named winner of the Leona Glenn Award for Outstanding World Language Educator in the state of Ohio.

Wiehe taught in Cincinnati for nine years before moving to Cleveland and being hired by the district.

"I enjoy my work in Hudson. I work with some wonderful colleagues and students, and together we have built a first-class program that many schools try to emulate," Wiehe said. "I have taught all levels of Spanish, but currently I am teaching Spanish 4 and the Advanced Placement classes."

Aside from her high school teaching, Wiehe is also the academic curriculum director for the Department of Teaching and Learning at the American College of Education where she writes and revises courses for the masters program and lends support to professors.

"I also teach courses, typically the capstone course that students take at the end of their graduate program," she said. "I also enjoy working at the college level at ACE. It allows me to have a positive influence on education in a much broader sense."

Wiehe works with a variety of teachers both across the country and internationally who will return to their respective classrooms and work directly with students.

"Being able to be part of their growth and success is priceless," Wiehe said.

Wiehe was nominated for the award by a colleague, she said. As part of the conference Wiehe will present two sessions -- focusing on strategies for teaching Advanced Placement Spanish and having fun in the classroom.

Hudson Superintendent Phil Herman called Wiehe an "excellent educator."

"Dr. Wiehe is an excellent educator who is a passionate advocate for World Language education and, more importantly, for the growth of each of her students," Herman said. "We are thrilled that her work as a Hudson teacher is being recognized through this award. We are proud of her work and excited to celebrate this accomplishment with her."
