AKRON -- Abby Zerull of Twinsburg is a member of The University of Akron's Speech and Debate Team that recently won its second straight title at the Ohio Forensics Association State Championships at Capital University.

The team dominated each of the 11 events and took 32 out of 61 placements available.

"This UA Speech and Debate Team is filled with exceptional talent," said Mark Rittenour, forensics program director and professor of instruction in communication at UA. "This team continues to showcase its talents and thrive at the state competition, making the University of Akron the top university in Ohio for speech and debate."

The team tackled a range of events that incorporate various speaking styles. Events included after-dinner speaking, persuasive speaking, extemporaneous speaking, poetry interpretation and more.

The Speech and Debate Team is a part of the School of Communication in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at UA. The team will compete at the 2017 National Speech Championships at Northwestern University later this month.
