Riverview Elementary School's students and staff have joined together in support of one courageous fourth-grade student, Keith Burkett.
Keitht is currently in his third battle against cancer. Over the 2016-17 school year, the school has had multiple fundraisers to support him.
His classmates in Kim Nixon's fourth-grade classroom recently designed a T-shirt for the students at the school to purchase. The T-shirt incorporated his favorite number, color and bear. Jay Sabatini, Kimpton Middle School teacher, and Michele Juszczec, Stow-Munroe Falls City School District's substitute teacher and parent, coordinated the sale.
A total of $756 was raised to benefit Keith.
"We are fortunate to have such a caring group of students and staff at our school," said Nixon. "The students in my class are always trying to come up with ways to support Keith. I am so proud to work with them to put the events together."
Additionally, the school hosted Kuts for Keith in December. During the event, students and teachers from Paul Mitchell Beauty School donated their time to cut the students' and staff's hair. A total of $1,200 was raised.
On Feb. 25, the school sold tickets for a basket raffle during the Parks and Recreation games. Tickets were also on sale throughout the week and at Riverview's Snuggle Up and Read Event on March 3. The drawing took place at the end of the event.
"I would like to say 'thank you' to Kim Nixon for coordinating all of these events," said Traci Kosmach, Riverview Elementary School's principal. "Keith and his family mean a lot to Team Riverview and we will continue to support them as much as we can."
