Last day for hiking shields is March 31

Hikers who completed at least eight trails during the 2016 Fall Hiking Spree have until March 31 to claim their rewards.

First-time participants who earned hiking staffs and commemorative shields, and veterans who earned shields, may visit the following locations:

The visitors center at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm (1828 Smith Road, Akron), Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

The nature center at Liberty Park (9999 Liberty Road, Twinsburg), Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

The Summit Metro Parks administrative offices (975 Treaty Line Road, Akron) Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Additionally, Summit Metro Parks is offering two opportunities -- both at the Nature Realm -- for spree hikers to get help attaching their shields to staffs: March 11 from 1 to 3 p.m., and March 31 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Fall Hiking Spree, held annually since 1964, is the largest and longest-running event of its kind in the nation. Rewards are free to Summit County residents. Out-of-county residents pay to receive their rewards ($10 for first-year hikers, $5 for veteran hikers).
