The Twinsburg Bulletin brought home a first-place award in the annual Osman C. Hooper Newspaper competition, awarded in Hooper Category 5, Division A for original columns. Gina Mace, former reporter for the Bulletin, was honored for her column entitled, "Think About It."
The winners were announced Feb. 9 at ONA's annual convention in Columbus. The Hooper Awards honor the best weekly newspapers in Ohio.
In their comments on the column, judges remarked: "Think About It columns raise the important issues of the kind people don't often think about. Gina Mace's writing is poignant and personalized, yet the focus is not the writer but the issue she is writing about. The columns show a deep engagement with the community as well as an ability to think broadly. I especially loved the moving manner in which the article on domestic violence was written."
Record Publishing Co.'s Associate Sports Editor Frank Aceto also received two awards in the annual competition.
Aceto was awarded second place in Hooper Category 7, Division A for sports coverage in the Hudson Hub-Times, as well as third place in the same category for sports coverage in the Tallmadge Express.
In their comments on the Hub-Times work, the judges said: "Compelling images and stories earn the Hudson Hub-Times second place in this division. Headlines were excellent as well." In their comments on the Tallmadge Express, the judges said: "The Tallmadge Express' sports coverage was strong. Good writing. Images were good."
