MACEDONIA -- The new Huntington Bank in Macedonia will get to keep the green coloring around the canopy at its drive-through window.

Green is the bank's national color, Huntington officials told members of the Macedonia Planning Commission, which voted, 3-2, to approve a motion to allow the canopy Feb. 13 but insisted there would not be any "laser lime" gutters. Instead, they will be white.

Planning commission members Chris Coblentz, Joseph Schiavone and Anthony Cox voted in favor of the motion, while Frank Posar and Kevin Westbrooks voted against the motion.

Huntington Bank is being relocated into the former FirstMerit Bank building at 8300 Golden Link Boulevard in Macedonia, while the Huntington Bank at 290 East Aurora Road in Northfield Center is closing.

Discussion during much of the meeting, which lasted nearly 40 minutes, focused on the color green.

City planner Brian Frantz's memo about the bank's proposed plans stated:

"The color of the green gutters must be changed, given the Western Reserve architectural theme established for the development," he wrote. "It should be painted white to match the Western Reserve architectural style present in this development. The city has worked hard to maintain a Western Reserve architectural style for this development and many others. The commission should ensure that the building continues to enhance that style."

Planning commission members wrestled with whether Huntington could keep the awning green or whether it had to be white.

Cox suggested allowing it to be green "because they're a national brand."

"They have a national exemption," he said. "The ATM machines are open all night. You'd think they'd want their color right there, but they've conceded that. I'd tend to allow this green over the door, particularly since I saw the images of all their other banks around the country."

Coblentz added, "They've been very specific about the canopy. But it's a gray area."

Huntington applicant Ray Wallenhorst responded, "The canopy is really important to us. It's part of our brand. The color we really try to stick to is that canopy.

"It really is a national brand," he added. "It's a way to draw people to our building."

Frantz also wrote that "materials used for free standing signs should be compatible with materials used on the exterior of the building. So eliminating the brick base from the existing ground monument sign is unacceptable. They must change their plan to maintain their brick base."
