The following events will be happening at The Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N Main St., Hudson.
Local columnist and author LuAnn Stuver Rogers will visit Jan. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. with her book "Dog Tales: The Book." The book features the best of the columns the author wrote for the Kent-Ravenna Record-Courier for nearly nine years. It reads like a story, following the adventures the author shared with her dogs in travel, competition, therapy and daily life. The book received endorsements by David Frei, longtime announcer for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and host of TV's "Into the Wild."
Rogers grew up in Kent, went to Kent-Roosevelt High School and Kent State University, and now lives in Ravenna. She will be accompanied by one of her Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Quest.
Cleveland author Barbara Marquardt will visit Feb. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. with her short and informative book "Good. Grief. 10 Ways to Heal with Love and Kindness."
The book is based on her father's struggle with Parkinson's disease and lung cancer, and depicts her personal 10-step journey towards healing from the loss of a loved one. As she shares her father's wisdom, she hopes to inspire others on their healing journeys. Supported by uplifting and thought-provoking quotes by some of our world's greatest teachers, this book will help those who are trying to move forward after loss.
Marquardt holds a masters in education and in community health education, and a graduate certificate in gerontology. She is a master certified health education specialist, nationally certified by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Additionally, Marquardt is certified in wellness in clinical practice and is a registered yoga teacher. She is currently working one-on-one with people with Parkinson's and their families and is developing a holistic health and wellness program specific to that disease. She also volunteers as the editor of a Parkinson's newsletter and for local support groups.
Come visit The Learned Owl Book Shop's Valentine's Day shop to pick out some books for your children and grandchildren. There is a lovely selection of books to choose from, including "Elmo's Valentine," "Elmo's World: Love!" and "Duck & Goose: Goose Needs a Hug."
Then on Feb. 12, join us for story time at 2 p.m. The group will read a story, share in an activity and send everyone home with a special treat. There is no fee for this event, but please call to put your name on the list.
A special story time on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. will involve reading two stories suitable for 3- to 8-year-olds that focus on the importance of kindness.
"Each Kindess" was written by Jacqueline Woodson. It reminds us of how even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference in someone's life. Ms. Woodson has won the Newbery Honor Award, the Coretta Scott King Award and the National Book Award, and the book is also beautifully illustrated by E. B. Lewis.
"Because Amelia Smiled" was written and illustrated by David Ezra Stein, the creator of many award-winning picture books, including "Interrupting Chicken" and "Leaves," among others. Amelia's kindness ripples through her community and beyond in interesting and unexpected ways.
There is no fee for this event, but we ask that you call to reserve a spot. There will be an activity or two and a snack as well and want to have plenty of supplies available.
