Parks head tapped to lead Golden Gate area

Craig Kenkel, superintendent of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, First Ladies National Historic Site and the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, has been appointed acting general superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco.

The position is a homecoming for Kenkel, who served previously as superintendent of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, as well as deputy superintendent and chief of cultural resources at GGNRA. Kenkel's 33-year career with the National Park Service includes extensive experience managing parks in urban areas.

Kenkel will serve until a new superintendent is selected and in place.

"GGNRA is one of the country's most dynamic and innovative parks," said Kenkel. "I have a huge admiration for its staff, partners, volunteers, and visitors, and I am excited to work with them during this time of leadership transition."

Cuyahoga Valley Deputy Superintendent Paul Stoehr will be the acting park superintendent while Kenkel is in San Francisco.
