Pair acquires GE

plant in Ravenna

For nearly three years, people have been wondering what will become of the former General Electric lamp plant in Ravenna. Now, the building on North Chestnut Street has an owner.

Ray and Ann Harner purchased the 172,000-square-foot building from GE, under the name of their company Chestnut Commerce LLC for $2.3 million, according to Portage County property records. The new owners are in the process of upgrading the building and hope to have it rented as soon as February.

General Electric Co. closed its plant in December 2013. It employed 164 people when GE made the decision official the previous March, but it had employed about 400 workers at its peak. GE's operations in Ravenna dated to the early 1960s.

"It is a very exciting project," said Jack Kohl, the real estate broker who represented the Harners. "The building is being updated and rented out." The portion the Harners purchased totals 47 acres. Kohl said there are future plans to use the extra land for future industrial development.

"It will be great to get this building back in productive use," he said. "Ray and Ann have a very positive vision for the site, and all of us that have been involved are very excited to see this come together."
