Hudson -- Ever wonder what makes the city of Hudson great?

Jeffrey Lehman, owner of Great Clips of Hudson, has wondered.

And, in order to find the answer, Lehman is sponsoring the first "What Makes us Great" program, which he hopes will become an ongoing Hudson tradition.

"We decided to create this important program for several reasons," Lehman said. "First, when we created our company - The 220 Group, Ltd - in 2007, we actually incorporated service into our company's mission statement. Specifically our mission statement calls on us to give back to the community we are privileged to serve. So it's in our DNA and we think it's important for many reasons... certainly giving back and being charitable is the right thing to do."

Lehman also called helping the community "personal medicine, helping us, our employees and clients to feel better every day."

"Second - we are a very fortunate family and have much to be thankful for," Lehman said. "We think the entire Hudson Community is great... especially this year."

Earlier this year the community rallied around Lehman's son, Jack, after a long hospital stay.

"Our son Jack was very sick for a very long time - we weren't certain he would live or ever come home, but thankfully he did and he has," Lehman said. "But the outpouring of support we received from so many organizations and groups in the community - church, neighbors, school just to name a few - was so tremendous, we just had to do something special to thank the entire community."

Every group has a story to tell about its importance, what it does, and why it's great, Lehman said.

"So we are now asking anyone in Hudson from any Hudson based group - your book club, garden club, scout troop, little league team, religious organization, second grade class room,...anyone - to simply tell us what makes your group/us great," he said.

Essays must be submitted in 250 words or less, describing what the writer does and why he or she thinks the subject is great.

The contest will run every three months, with the first period Oct. 1 through the end of December.

"Simply drop off your submission to Great Clips of Hudson, located in the Acme Plaza, next to Panera, anytime during our regular hours," Lehman said. "Each quarter Great Clips of Hudson and a panel of independent Hudson- based judges will select a winner and Great Clips of Hudson will award that group $250."

Submissions can be made during each calendar quarter, Lehman said.

"Every day we hear stories about a great group doing wonderful things in the Hudson community, some get recognized, others not as much," Lehman said. "This is their chance to tell others the great things that go on everyday - sometimes without being noticed."
