The candidates for Summit County executive -- Republican Bill Roemer and Democrat Ilene Shapiro -- have agreed to a debate presented by the Akron Press Club on Oct. 19.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., and the debate will begin at 11:55 a.m. at the University of Akron's Quaker Station, 135 South Broadway. It is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area and the University of Akron's Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

Journalists picked by the Akron Press Club will ask the two questions. Each will get 90 seconds to answer, and 45 seconds for rebuttal.

Shapiro, 69, of Akron was appointed as county executive after Russ Pry died in July. She was County Council president and is the first female county executive in Summit County.

Roemer, 58, of Richfield, served a term on County Council. He is a retired Ameritech sales director and certified public accountant.

The deadline for reservations for the debate is noon Oct. 14. For more information, including cost, or to register, contact Lianne Fowler, Press Club administrator, at 330-552-8860 or .
