Sagamore Hills -- Authorities say a 71-year-old Brecksville man died Tuesday morning after falling off a cliff east of Brandywine Falls.
Northfield Center-Sagamore Hills Fire Chief Frank Risko said the man did not survive the fall due to extensive head injuries.
Summit County Sheriff's Deputy Wes Dobbins said the man apparently fell from a point just past the boardwalk's western entrance from the other side of the wood-fenced boardwalk designed to keep people away from the steep sides of the gorge leading up to Brandywine Falls.
"It appears he was at the overlook at the top and fell over, and fell to his death," said.
Dobbins estimated the fall to be about 100 feet.
He said the man was discovered by hikers walking at the bottom of the gorge around 11:30 a.m. The hikers called 911, and Dobbins was the first on the scene.
Risko and Dobbins said family members informed authorities the man was last seen earlier in the morning around 6 or 8 a.m.
Risko said a 37-year-old sheriff's deputy was treated for heat exhaustion during the recovery. He was taken for further treatment to the Cleveland Clinic's emergency room in Twinsburg.
In addition to the fire district, the Macedonia Fire Department and Sagamore Hills police assisted Cuyahoga Valley National Park rangers, who are handling the investigation.
Information from the park service was not immediately available.
