Pair of teachers hired
At a special meeting June 6, the Aurora Board of Education awarded one-year contracts to the following teachers: Karen A. Baker, English at the high school; and Dmitri E. Kourennyi, physics at the high school. Baker has a master’s degree and Kourennyi has a Ph.D.
Summer hours noted
Aurora schools are now operating on their summer schedule to conserve energy wherever possible. The following hours for each school building will be in effect until the 2014 -15 school year begins in August:
School Board office — Mondays to Thursdays through Aug. 1, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (If registration is needed on a Friday, call 330-954-2228 to make arrangements); Aurora High School and Harmon — Mondays to Fridays, 7 a.m.  to 2 p.m.; Harmon Middle School — Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Harmon closed in July); Leighton, Craddock and Miller — Mondays to Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (all closed in July).
Gift cards given away
The following Aurora High School students were winners of the gift card raffle in association with a recent Camp Sunshine fundraiser: Sam Flowers, Jesse Bergoine, Cara Burns, Megan MacIntyre, Louise Beckstrom, Michela Palma, Caroline Lukehart, Claire Mulvaney and Andrew Messing.
Leighton students win
for collecting boxtops
The following students at Leighton School won prizes in the boxtops collection contest: Dean Larrance (Kalahari trip) and Luke Fennell, Bryce Peckinpaugh, Joey Phillips, Olivia Wervey, Megan Brodnick, Kade Morgenroth, Shylie Baker, Kiara Perez, Moriah Hatfield and Anthony Gelardi ($10 gift cards to the Latest Scoop).
Caught being good during the last full week of school at Leighton were Miriam Harden, third grade; Maria Parks, fourth; and Ethan DelGuidice, fifth.
Recently, the certified staff handled a luncheon for support staffers. Thanks to master scheduler Dan Clapper, Leighton was able to cover for all of the support staffers (health aids, office workers, custodians and lunchroon, recess and lunch aides).
Thanks go to Eddie Nabring, Josue Perez and Kathy Irriate for the fifth-grade band and orchestra concert recently, and to Mrs. Thieding, Mrs. Mehallis, Mrs. Rodriquez and Mrs. Kerchenski for  organizing the COSI field day.
