Welsh earns national
award as psychiatrist
Aurora resident Dr. Brian
Welsh, chief medical officer for Coleman Professional Services, was honor-ed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness as an exemplary psychiatrist at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual conference in New York City.
Only 23 doctors from across the country were selected. Welsh was nominated by Karen Cox, president of NAMI Portage County.
According to a NAMI statement, the exemplary psychiatrist award honors doctors “who go ‘an extra mile’ in their commitment to providing excellent mental health care.”
Welsh’s accomplishments include developing a strategy for transitioning long-term stable consumers to primary care using specific criteria and with procedures to address rapid re-entry as needed.
He supervises all psychiatrists, advanced practice nurses and nurses throughout Coleman’s seven counties, and mentors them in developing a collaborative approach with consumers and their family members. He also has delivered telepsychiatry at Coleman locations since 2012.
“We’re very proud to have Dr.Welsh on our staff,”said Coleman CEO Nelson Burns. “His work to improve access to care for persons with a mental illness is important as we continue our efforts to serve people quickly and effectively.”
