New gas rate for city
program is $4.65 Mcf
City officials have announced they have chosen Constellation Energy Gas Choice, Inc. as the supplier for the natural gas aggregation program. It will run through the October 2015 billing cycle. A $4.65 per Mcf rate has been set for gas consumed from June 2014 to October 2015.
"We are pleased to continue to offer this program to our residents as another option in their attempts to manage energy costs," said Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin. "The $4.65 per Mcf rate for our residents is generally lower than comparable offers residents can obtain on their own at this time and is lower than the current rate that has served us well through this bitter winter."
Womer Benjamin reminds residents that "this program makes no guarantee of savings and it is completely voluntary."
Those wishing to join the city's program can enroll by phone, mail, fax or online at www.constellation.com/aurora by April 25. Those currently in the program will receive a renewal notice and do not need to take action to receive the new rate.
Any resident or small business currently served by another supplier or Dominion East Ohio may join the city's program by calling Constellation at 1-800-718-1493. Residents served by another supplier should be aware of the obligations in an existing contract such as early termination fees.
Ohio Teen Miss Heart
title goes to Cyronek
Julia Cyronek of Aurora has been awarded the title of 2014 Ohio's Teen Miss Heart of the USA, a pageant conducted by Miss Heart of the USA LLC.
She is the daughter of Kristina and Nicholas Cyronek and sister of Anna. During her 2014 queen reign, she will make appearances and be involved in the community.
The Miss Heart of the USA pageant program strives to provide contestants with the opportunity to have fun, establish lasting friendships and build confidence and self-esteem, while encouraging them to get involved with organizations in their communities that benefit those in need.
She will represent Ohio at the 2014 Miss Heart of the USA national pageant, where she will compete for a $7,000 scholarship.
The Miss Heart of the USA program began as a food drive for a local rescue mission whose pantry was low, and has blossomed into a national pageant program that has collected and distributed more than 3 million nonperishable food items to nonprofit groups.
It also annually collects thousands of toys for organizations like Toys for Tots and Santas Of America. Pageants also benefit organizations like the Women's Hope Center and American Cancer Society.

Wilson out, Kudley in
as museum's director
The Aurora Historical Society has announced that museum director Dr. Marcelle Wilson has stepped down from her position effective April 8.
The society has appointed John Kudley to succeed Wilson as the director effective June 1, 2014.
Wilson had been the director for eight years and was originally hired as the museum's archivist. During her tenure, she has cataloged the society's holdings as well as extensively researched Aurora's history and has provided quality children's programing.
She also orchestrated national travelling exhibits sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Ohio Humanities Council.
Wilson has been named to the staff of the Youngstown Museum of Industry and Labor, which is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society and Youngstown State University. She has been a tremendous asset and has been instrumental in making the Aurora Historical Society a leader among historical societies in Northeast Ohio, according to historical society officials.
Planning unit to meet
Three items are on the planning commission's agenda tonight (April 16) at 7 in town Hall. Members will consider a minor subdivision / lot split for Capital L. Corp. at 1340 Page Road, a site plan for an addition at Cabmat Inc. on Gentry Drive and a site plan for an addition at Aurora School of Music at 211 S. Chillicothe Road.
Abatement sought for
dentist's new building
At City Council's April 14 committee of the whole meeting, members discussed a 15-year, 75 percent tax abatement for a new dental office building proposed for Dr. C. Aydin Cabi at 485 N. Aurora Road. The investment is valued at $860,000.
According to Finance Director Bob Paul, Cabi would pay $58,541 in taxes over the 15-year period, a $175,623 savings. Documents submitted to the city by Cabi state 10 employees would be retained and two would be added in the first three years of the abatement.
Council also discussed a proposed agreement with GeoDecisions for services to upgrade GeoPlan Municipal Suite software at a cost of $21,000, which is in the 2014 budget.
Members discussed Service Director' John Trew's request to apply for a safety grant to help purchase a valve maintenance trailer. The grant would be for $40,000, and the total cost of the railer is $58,950.
Council OK'd on an emergency basis an additional appropriation of $34,929 for improvements associated with the repainting of the north water tower, bringing the total cost to be paid to Nerone & Sons to $104,584. Pittsburgh Paint and Tower is doing the repainting.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost and raise money for the fight against cancer.
Relay For Life of Northern Portage County takes place June 6-7 at Veterans Stadium in Aurora. Teams are encouraged to sign up early as this gives them more time to raise money.

Lines will be flushed
From April 24 to May 16, the Aurora water department will flush lines throughout the system to improve carrying capacity and water quality.
Flushing will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Customers may experience intermittent pressure fluctuations and a temporary condition of discolored water. If the latter occurs, customers should not allow their water to run.
Water clarity eventually will return. Residents should not wash whites if water is discolored. The water will be safe for bathing, drinking and food preparation. Any concerns should be directed to 330-995-9109.
Brush collection set; no spring leaf pickup
The city's brush collection program will commence with the first pick up date of April 21. Each month, brush must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the designated date to be guaranteed to be picked up for that month.
Additional information may be found on the city's website at www.auroraoh.com and in the lobbies of Town Hall and the service department. The annual department flyer listing all services available to residents will be mailed out in mid-April.
Curbside leaf vacuum pick up is not available in the spring. Therefore, residents who wish to dispose of leaves left over from the winter season may bag them and dispose of them with the normal trash collection, or may call the service department at 330-995-9116) to request pickup.
During the current season, the vacuum equipment is utilized for other functions.
Library sets activities
National Library Week is being celebrated at Aurora Memorial Library with a contest where patrons can guess how many library books are on the shelves. Patrons of all ages can participate through April 30. A gift basket will be awarded.
Meanwhile, the parent and child book club for youths ages 8 to 12 with a caring adult will meet April 19 at 2 p.m. to discuss "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. A chocolate treat will be given as a door prize.

Staff gets recognition
Aurora resident Pam Staff was honored April 12 by the Andy Nowacki Foundation as a 2014 recipient of a Heroes For Andy Award. The banquet took place in Mentor.
Staff, who is founder of Ohio Military Family Connection, was recognized for "her tireless efforts in assisting military families in the area." She devotes her time throughout Northeast Ohio.
The benefit is a tribute to the heroism of Lance Cpl. Andrew W. Nowacki of the U.S. Marine Corps, who was killed Feb. 26, 2005 while on duty in Babil Province, Iraq.
