Portage County’s first baby of the new year was in an apparent hurry to join the world.
The baby boy, born to Marie and Shawn Harvey of Aurora, arrived at 1:43 a.m. Jan. 1, less than an hour after his parents arrived at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
The child weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. He has two brothers — Zachary, 7, and Isaac, 2. But there was one essential thing he still lacked a few hours after his birth — a name.
Zachary and Isaac came to meet their little brother that afternoon, accompanied by their dad and their grandmother, Kathy Vanaman of Tallmadge. The boys joked that the boy should be named “Squeaky” for his quiet, high-pitched cry.
He eventually was named Andrew Jacob Harvey.
“He’s small,” Zachary declared after seeing the boy. Turning to Isaac, he asked, “Do you remember being that small?”
Then he confessed that he didn’t remember being that small either, nor could he recall when Isaac was the same size.
Isaac seemed fascinated with the boy, constantly asking to touch him and pointing out his ears, feet and nose.
Their parents said they weren’t sure when their child would be born, noting that Marie’s due date was Dec. 27. At about 12:45 a.m. they finally arrived at the hospital, and their youngest son was born less than an hour later. Dr. Jennifer Carroll delivered the baby.
The couple was told that another family already was in labor when they arrived. That baby, birth center staff said, was born just before 5 a.m., and another baby was born at about 10 a.m. A fourth mother was in labor late that afternoon.
It’s an apparent baby boom for the birth center, which sometimes sees slow traffic on the first day of the year.
Isaac, who had his second birthday less than a month before his brother’s arrival, had trouble putting his thoughts into words. Zachary talked about teaching his littlest brother to swim some day, though he said he’d have to learn himself first.
“We’re just happy all is well,” Shaun Harvey said.
