Hudson -- Before the trappings of Christmas 2013 were put away, warnings about the first snow storm of 2014 were being issued.

The storm began New Year's Eve.

"We are still in the middle of this snow event," Hudson Communication Manager Jody Roberts said the afternoon of Jan. 2. "We've had 14 trucks out doing 14 snow routes since New Year's Eve."

Due to possibly as much as 5 more inches of snow falling, the city extended a parking ban which originally was scheduled to expire at 10 p.m. Jan. 2. The ban was extended until 10 a.m. Jan. 3. Roberts estimated about 4 inches of snow was on the ground at the city municipal services center.

"Major roads are currently in good shape," Roberts said. "We won't have salt totals until after the event, as all our staff are out on the roads."

There had been no major accidents reported due to the storm as of Jan. 2, Roberts said.

The city has a fleet of more than 15 vehicles to maintain 14 snow plow routes, according to Roberts. The city stores between 3,800 and 4,000 tons of salt and a 5,000 gallon tank filled with de-icer.

Streets are maintained in a priority order during a snow event. During heavy snowfall primary streets may require continuous plowing before secondary routes are maintained.

The roads are maintained in the following order: main/primary roads; neighborhood/subdivisions; cul-de-sacs/dead end streets and median crossovers.

City plows are responsible for clearing snow on 350 lane miles of street, about the equivalent of driving from Hudson to Chicago, according to Roberts. If it snows for eight hours, it generally takes another eight-plus hours after the snow has stopped to clear every street and cul-de-sac.

Students will not return to classes until Jan. 6, however the weather caused at least one cancellation. The Jan. 2 Hudson-Mentor junior varsity and varsity basketball games were canceled due to the weather.

Also, the Hudson Library and Historical Society closed early due to weather conditions.
