The city's building department issued permits for construction projects valued at $2.82 million in the month of July, according to secretary Ruth Dennison.

Residential projects were valued at $2.79 million and included seven single-family homes, six each alterations and decks, four utility buildings, two above-ground pools and one each addition, garage sand in-ground pool.

Commercial projects were valued at $31,500 and included a kitchen hood at James Place on East Garfield Road and an addition and renovation at Anna Maria of Aurora. There were no industrial building permits applied for.

Forty-one licenses were issued, including 31 for general work, four for electrical and three each for heating-air conditioning and plumbing.

Total department revenue was $74,948, including $16,790 for building permits, $4,100 for licenses, $6,125 in impact fees, $4,093 for miscellaneous, $291 in state fees, $8,550 for completion deposits and $35,000 for topography deposits.

City inspectors made 314 residential and 55 commercial-industrial inspections in July.

Police Chief Seth Riewaldt reported that 21 Part I offenses -- the most serious -- were handled by personnel in July, including 20 thefts and one motor vehicle theft.

Other activity included disorderly conduct (40 incidents), domestic violence (14), vandalism-criminal mischief (12), fraud-identity theft (four), missing persons and drug abuse (two each) and other sex offenses (one).

OFFICERS FILED 683 reports, handled 166 traffic-related details and 182 criminal-type calls and performed 1,659 service-related tasks for a total of 2,007 calls handled by officers.

Officers investigated 25 traffic accidents, three of which involved injuries and four of which were on private property. There were no fatalities.

Twenty-nine adults were charged with crimes, including four warrants served, two drug abuse violations, one domestic violence incident and 17 other charges.

Personnel gave out 179 traffic citations, including 102 for parking violations, 26 for speeding, five each for ignoring traffic lights and stop signs and driving under the influence, three for driving under suspension, one each for reckless operation and not wearing a seatbelt and 36 for other reasons.

Thirteen juveniles were referred to juvenile court, with seven determined to be unruly and six for traffic violations.

Personnel drove police vehicles 18,490 miles during the month, bringing the total for the first seven months of 2013 to 131,025, compared to 106,139 at the same time last year.

Fire Chief David Barnes reported that his crews responded to 41 fire alarms and 142 rescue calls and made 16 fire prevention inspections. There was no fire loss. For the first seventh months of the year, fire loss is estimated at$176,000, compared to $125,400 for the same period last year.

The main reasons for rescue calls were sudden illness and accidental injuries (19 incidents each), weakness/dizziness and lift assistance (14 each) and fall victims (10).

CREWS MADE 60 trips to Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center, 14 to Hillcrest Hospital, 12 to Robinson Memorial Hospital, 11 to Ahuja Medical Center and two each to Bedford Hospital and University Hospitals-Twinsburg. Forty-one people were treated at the scene or did not require transportation.

During fire prevention inspections, hazards found were exit signs not illuminated or exit sign backup power not functional, emergency lighting not functional, exit aisles blocked, fire extinguishers out of service and lack of fire extinguishers.

Firefighters attended meetings or training out of Aurora on six occasions, made four school visits, taught three CPR classes and had two drill nights.

Contractors collected 615 tons of trash and 135 tons of recyclables in July, a ratio of 30 percent to 20 percent. For the first seven months of 2013, 3,309 tons of trash and 788 tons of recylables have been collected.

The city has collected 750 pounds of electronics materials and 70 printer cartridges.

The service department reported cemetery receipts for July were only $160, all of which came from foundations.

Water and sewer receipts totaled $67,457, with about $22,472 coming from Hawthorn of Aurora and about $44,945 coming from Yorkshire Estates.

The city oversaw the cleaning of 31 private septic systems in July, which resulted in 54,000 gallons of sewage being removed. That brings the totals for 2013 to 114 systems cleaned and 197,290 gallons of sewage removed.
